Secrets of Game Selection

When I first thought about writing this article I had to decide whether it was poker strategy or an article. I looked up strategy on the internet and came up with this definition:

'A plan of action resulting in accomplishing a specific goal'

The goal of the strategy section on this website is to make money at poker and game selection is an extremely important factor in whether or not you will be a winning player.

Poker is a game of skill; to be a winning player in the long run you need to play better than the others. So where are these poor players!? Well, they can be found in games where many players are seeing the flop (anything above 35% I would consider as a good loose game) because this means there are at least a couple of loose/poor players there.

The concept is simple; the loose players play more hands, therefore they must play weaker hands on average compared to someone who chooses carefully which cards they will see the flop with and in poker the better hand will win more often.

Also if a player plays too many hands this indicates that they are relatively new to the game and therefore will be less skilled anyway.

RULE 1. FIND THE LOOSE TABLES AND GET ON THE WAITING LIST!

Now who can tell me what's wrong with this picture?

At first glance you'll probably say not a thing! this guy from Heubach has the right idea! he's waiting for a seat on an extremely loose table!

Well, although a very friendly ghost I'm sure, k4sper has made a HUGE error here.

You see those 4 guys above him on the list? these are very likely to be tight-aggressive, solid players who have carefully selected to prey on this table. Unfortunately by the time our friend actually manages to claim his seat these sneaky players will have busted out the weak players leaving only a real tight (and less profitable!) game.

RULE 2: DON'T GET ON A WAITING LIST IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE ANY MORE THAN SECOND IN POSITION!

And thus are the dynamics of online poker:

  • Solid players find a loose table with lots of poor players and gets on the waiting list

  • One of the players on the table will bust out or leave opening up a seat for the solid player

  • The solid player will manage to de-stack a weak player in no time, leaving a seat open for another tight-aggressive player who was on the waiting list.

This process repeats itself until the whole game is full of solid players. The time it takes for a table to go from loose to super tight can be less than 20 minutes.

RULE 3: CHANGE YOUR TABLE IF IT HAS TIGHTENED UP TOO MUCH!

If you follow these rules I'm certain you'll see the profits in no time!- Good luck, Joe
