Pet hates in live poker
We all have our pet hates in live poker. I want to tell
you mine, but I’m also interested in yours. In my case most relate to
timewasting.
Not bringing singles (£1 chips) to the table.
This is a classic timewaster. It’s not such an issue in Gutshot where the
dealers have their own float, but in other clubs it’s quite common for a new
game to start and almost everyone turns up knowing that it’s a new game
with no £1 chips in a game where the blinds are £2/£2 or £3/£3. It means that
dealers waste time making change for the players.
Throwing the singles into the pot when you will need them later.
Say you are under the gun when the blinds are £3 and £3 and you wish to call.
There are 6 singles in the pot and you have only got 3. What should you do? Well
if you’re sensible, you call with a £5 chip and take change, so that you have
chips with which to call the blinds on the next hand. You know you’re going to
need them if you don’t win this particular pot. Although this is obvious, it
astonishes me how many people instinctively throw in the 3 singles and then have
to needlessly waste time on the next hand getting change.
Calling larger bets with singles.
Similar to before: Having called, someone raises you £8. It’s usually quicker to
call with 2 red chips and take change, but there are many players who will count
out 8 £1 chips and place them in. In many games everyone does it and the result
is that the winner of the pot ends up stacking about 30 single chips. And guess
what happens next? Yes, the same people who threw them in before now waste time
asking to trade them back.
Turning up with cash instead of chips.
It does annoy me when people go straight to a table and expect other players to
give them change. Why should they? There is a cash desk for this.
'Deal me in!'
I know I’ve done this one myself, but it really annoys me seeing people walk
away from a cash game shouting ‘Deal me in!’ What proportion of the time do they
fail to get back in time to play the hand? I would say it’s almost a quarter. I
don’t understand why clubs can’t have a rule that nobody gets dealt in unless
they are at the table. What happens in practice when they don’t return? Time is
wasted looking to see whether they will get back in time. And what about the
players who are seated who hold their cards up while the absentee returns? Why
should they have to worry that their cards have been seen?
Ordering food or drinks mid-hand.
If it’s your turn to act then you should make it your priority to act. I really
get annoyed at people who order sandwiches and make everyone wait until the
order is complete before they look at their cards. I know it seems right and
proper to give the waiter/waitress your attention when they are with you, but in
a card club they should expect to be made to wait until players have acted.
